The arid and stripped landscape of the Bank finds its most pronounced expression in the Royal Bardenas, a space of 42.500 hectares, on the Southeast of Navarre where the soil erosion of the clays grounds, chalk and sandstone from the folding of the Pyrenees have created a lunar landscape appearance with cracks, high peeled plateaus (flat) and solitary and lofty mountains (seamounts). This territory belonged of the crown of Navarre which gave its use for winter grazing herds of sheep of the Pyrenean Roncal and Salazar valleys. These valleys still maintain this renovated practice every year on the 18 of September when the sheep go into the bardenero landscape with a ritual, it is known as la Sanmiguelada, which attracts of a large audience. In times of Felipe V, the surrounding villages of the Bardenas collided the duties of the wood harvesting, causing deforestation of the land, and later for the cereal exploitation, a use that continues even today.
The Bardenera vegetation is scarce and unevenly distributed. The main tree spots are pine and are in the Vedado of Eguaras, a nature reserve north of the territory, and to a lesser extent, in the Black Bardena, in the southern part. In these plant groupings, pines coexist with large-sized shrubs as kermes, escambron or junipers. Pine forests are populated by a diverse avifauna including wood pigeons, doves, jays, plus raptors such as kites, toed eagles and driveways or alcotantes, and other smaller species such as goldfinches, finches, goldfinches and blackbirds.
In the central part or White Bardena, In the central part or Bardena Blanca, the best known landscape, vegetation consists of scattered tracts of xerophytic scrub rosemary, thyme, ontino, sisallo and rush, in which small steppe birds live such as the skylark live, the Crested Lark, grouse and bargain.
The Bardenas has an area of outstanding natural value which exerts an irresistible attraction for many visitors looking for an open space for hiking, bicycle touring route and, in general, for the enjoyment of nature. Access to territory can be done from any of the adjoining municipalities, usually through farm tracks, but the most common route is from the hermitage of the Virgen del Yugo, in Arguedas, where from you can access to the Warren Eguaras and most characteristic landmarks of this landscape in Blanca, such as the place of Pisquerra, the hillock of Sanchicorrota, the Ralla and Rallón.
